Those of us who admire Tod Browning's 1932 film melodrama Freaks are familiar with Schlitzie the Pinhead, a good-natured, microcephalic 20th-century sideshow attraction who was--as Bill Griffith helps us see--a human being who yearned for kindness and emotional security. And although Griffith is unsparing in his graphic novel's depiction of the indifference and cruelty levied against Schlitzie by sideshow crowds, and some of Schlitzie's handlers as well, in the end Nobody's Fool is a celebration of the inner lives of all of us: our need and capacity for love, and the things we do to bring hurt and happiness to others. Griffith has been a leading American writer-cartoonist for nearly 50 years, with significant work in underground comics dating from way back when to his contemporary Zippy the Pinhead comic strip. I called him a cartoonist in that last sentence, but Griffith is an artist, with very sure storytelling ability and a sensitivity to the humanity that makes us human. Nobody's Fool is funny, sobering, antic, sad, and finally triumphant. I laughed and scowled but in the end I enjoyed a lovely sense of peace. The graphic novel form offers skilled practitioners opportunities for unique kinds of self-expression (Griffith has been fascinated by Schlitzie since his days in art school), and for larger explorations of those things that amuse, frighten, and ennoble us. Carefully researched and beautifully produced (the book is a joy to look at and hold), Nobody's Fool is--and I'm quoting Schlitzie here--boffo.
Fans of Bill Griffith's Zippy comics (which I have been for decades) will be delighted by this biography of Schlitzie, Zippy's real life counterpart. The book is also a tribute to the "sideshows" of yesterday. I still remember my reaction to a two-headed infant preserved and on display in a jar at one of these shows sometime in the late 1940s: a mixture of wonder and disgust. This book is the author's greatest work so far in my opinion. Long may he draw!
