About the Author
Andrew Chamberlain is a writer and creative writing tutor. He has ghost-written several commercially published memoirs, including the bestselling Once an Addict by Barry Woodward. His short stories and novel length fiction have been commercially and self-published, in print and online. Since 2014 he has presented The Creative Writer's Toolbelt, a podcast that gives practical advice on the craft of writing. Andrew's focus is on providing accessible advice to writers that they can apply straight away to their own work. The Creative Writer's Toolbelt Handbook, is a compilation of the very best advice and insight from the first 100 episodes of the podcast. I've been writing for years, and published, and I've read so many books about the craft, and listened to so many podcasts ... and yet I've found so few advice-givers as competent and informative as Andrew Chamberlain. He does not merely "tell" you what works and what doesn't, he "shows" you with practical examples from the world's best authors (e.g. Tolkien, Rowling, King, Austen etc.) I've learned a lot and my writing has improved tenfold. It lays the foundations and then helps you build. Indeed, creative writing courses may soon allow this book to usurp old tomes like "The Elements of Style" or McKee's "Story" as required reading.

As I read The Creative Writer’s Toolbelt Handbook I feel like I’m talking to a friend, not being lectured to from up on high. The information is dished out in easily digestible portions with helpful graphics to anchor the visual learner.I highly recommend this easily reference-able creative writing resource, which I’m sure to: underline, highlight, dog-ear, sticky note, and tab. As I’m sure to be re-reading and referring back to again and again for years to come.Thank you Andrew J. Chamberlain. I love being able to keep this well loved podcast close at hand.
Disclaimer: I was an alpha reader and have enthusiastically invested in this project.So, the first question you might ask is, why did he invest? After all, there’s no shortage of books on writing. I first caught on to Andrew’s writing podcast through a link to an interview with one of my favourite writers. What appealed to me was that he was a very good interviewer and that his questions to authors drew out many useful tips centred around the process of writing itself. In fact, his podcasts on writing are liberally sprinkled with interviews with writers and others closely connected to the writing trade (e.g. editors and publishers).However, this book and the podcast’s main focus is to give practical tips on creative writing in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Andrew does this in easily digestible chunks. The handbook is a distillation of the podcast into book form. For me, it's a very valuable addition to the podcast and it exploits the podcast by carefully cross-referencing the relevant broadcasts. Thus book and podcast create a synergistic effect. The book compensates for the weakness of the podcast form by enabling the reader to easily find the most relevant information for the particular writing task being undertaken. My five stars relate to this symbiotic partnership. Don’t get me wrong, the book is completely self-contained, but if you purchase this book and haven’t yet listened to the podcast, it will certainly enhance your overall experience and vice versa.
This book feels like a best friend is walking you the concepts and using real examples to illustrate each aspect of writing craft. Plain spoken yet brainy in its tight presentation. I Love the podcast but adore this book. If you're looking to understand and practice the most essential writing concepts, this book is what you've been looking for.
This book covers all of the basis of creative writing. If you didn't get much grounding in story structure, plotting, showing/not telling, etc., this is the book for you. I use it as a reference frequently. I can' recommend it enough!
I’ve been listening to Chamberlain’s podcast for a couple of years and it’s helped my writing immensely. I’m delighted that there is now a companion book! It’s packed with the same excellent information, tips and tools as the podcast, but now I can reach for it whenever I need to. The handbook covers topics such as structure, voice, world building, 'show don't tell' and pretty much everything you need to know to move your story forward.If you’re after a solid resource to help with your fiction writing, something you can look up whenever you get stuck or when you want to improve a certain aspect of your story, then this is the book for you.
A very useful practical (hands-on rather than theory) guide with many (many) examples to show how a character or technique works in other fiction. This book's a great amplification of the topics covered in the Podcast, and cross-references with the podcast episode covering each topic as well. Highly recommended.
