Erwin McManus is one of those who takes the road less traveled and isn't always 'unpacking' is suitcase of troubles.This is an ongoing tough study for me. Over the years I've heard and still hear many Christians with totally wrong conclusions about how simply believing in God and Christ will make life so much easier. I expected McManus to continue with the same lame-brain conclusion but, instead, he clears up this issue by pointing out the misconception, then dealing with itMcManus goes deep into Hebrews 11:1, FAITH, by reflecting on Saul's son, Jonathan and the relationship between faith/belief. Years ago I studied Paul Yongii Cho's book "The Fourth Dimension" about faith - still a fantastic read - but McManus gives another example of how to deal with the 'faith' issue by linking many different stories and guidance quotes from both the Original and New Testaments.All of us in the study group have come to appreciate McManus' teaching approach. Normally we expect the teaching guide to mimic the study materials, but, in this approach during the group session activities, the leaders guide and brief weekly video enhance the book rather than reflect on the books contents by digging even deeper into the faith/belief relationship.This study challenges the belief level of a reader as well as group participants but in powerful ways.Strongly recommended for anyone who thinks they are a mature Christian and yet finds themselves still struggling with the concepts of faith and belief, dreams and visions. To let the cat out of the bag, McManus basically says "If you don't know what to do, get out from under the safe shade of the Pomegranate tree and... - Do Something".

Excellent and practical. The book is a practical study of 1 Samuel 14 and Jonathan's impact on the rest of his people, Israel. This is a must read for leaders, but can be used by any Christian to get out of their spiritual slump or to keep from falling into one.The Jonathan study itself is dispersed throughout the book which the author then uses to launch into his own or others' experiences around the principle that is being looked at. The chapter titles are consistent with the principles. This makes the book a useful quick reference after you are done reading it.The flow of the book is very helpful. McManus first starts with the choices we must make. Next, he lays out the actual application. Our choice to seize the daylight leads to taking the initiative. As we take the initiative, we face uncertainty of the success of the outcomes we're seeking. It is at this point we need to use the influence we have with others to enable them and us to take the necessary risks that will secure the advance to reach the goal.The last section of the book deals with the impact that we will make on others as well as the situation. Here is where McManus really puts it all together. Instead of one isolated incident, he describes how a series of impacts can gel together into a movement, with the real possibility seeing God use us to awaken others to Christ and His kingdom. Again, he uses several practical examples with all the real frustrations and joys of chasing daylight.There are two confusing aspects to the book. Neither of them are bad, but they are not connected well into what he is doing. The first one is that the book is titled "Chasing Daylight," but the three main section titles are foreshock, epicenter, and aftershock. Yet, there isn't a theme of earthquakes. He is mixing motifs of chasing and earthquakes. The shocks are a reference to the earthquake that came after Jonathan engaged the Philistines. If you ignore the section titles and stick with the chapter titles, the flow is there.The second one is the stories of "The Perils of Ayden" that are inserted at the end of the chapters. The entry numbers remind one of Star Trek's star-dates. These fiction vignettes pick up the principles of each chapter, but can be confusing especially in the very first one. They don't add to the power of the real life stories in the text and do form a distraction.Overall, a well-written book to encourage Western Christians to engage the culture for Jesus Christ. Church leaders will do well to consider the Jonathan model that McManus lays out so very well.

I would love to meet Pastor McManus face-to-face! This man has a handle on our lives as Christians and, more especially, our calling as pastors! He helps the reader understand that our lives are but eternity lived moment-by-moment - that our development here in this life leads us directly into the ministries to which God has placed before us.
