About the Author
Todd M. Howard is an accomplished songwriter, musician, and performer and is the bassist/vocalist in the acoustic American roots quartet Last Fair Deal. He co-produced and mixed the band's most recent album, True Tales. In addition to playing bass for several other bands and recording artists, Todd is founder and principal of Howard Digital Media, a Massachusetts-based creative media development company. In 2011, Todd produced two records for new artists Ally LaRoche and Bill Bonnell, and he is currently co-producing San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Karmen Buttler's upcoming release. He recently authored and produced a video-based web training series on Corel Painter 11, created a graphic design and animation training podcast series for Adobe in 2007, and was the author and instructor on four DVD-based training titles in the Digital Media Training Series produced by Magnet Media: Inside Mac OS X: 10.4 Tiger, Inside iLife '06, Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Jumpstart, and Mac OS X: 10.5 Leopard Jumpstart.

This is an informative and well written users guide. I can't see what all the negative reviews are about. Sure, the pictures could be a bit better, but it's not like you can't see them. I have terrible vision and can see them good enough. And as for the middle section with all the useless pictures of the various menus, who cares! Skip over it you snivelers. I am glad I bought it, and would recommend it to anyone who needs help with Garageband 11.
I purchased two books, GarageBand '11- How It Works (copyright 2013) and the more exhaustive GarageBand '11 Power: The Comprehensive Recording and Podcasting Guide (copyright 2012) to help me walk through and become familiar with the general organization of Garageband. My purpose being to learn how to record some demos in aid of securing gigs in new to me venues in the singer songwriter genre. I am posting this review for both.I have years of playing in and running sound in live rock bands so I can claim familiarity with mixing boards and general audio signal paths, inserts, etc. I have also played around with ProTools, but stopped short of climbing the very steep learning curve of that pro level DAW.Both of these works are reasonably well written and are decent at describing the recording workflow. What they both lack is being updated to conform to the latest edition of the GarageBand (10.0.1 at the time I'm writing this). The window content is significantly different, not dramatically, but significantly and if you are counting on being able to proceed by following the written directions/ screen shots in these books, you will not succeed and you will be frustrated. I note that even the brief Apple website video tutorials are equally, if not mores out of date.I don't know of/ have not yet discovered an up to date resource manual/ user's guide for GarageBand, so I have no alternative material to suggest, but I doubt I would purchase these works again.
riends in GarageBand land: I'm still looking for that perfect book to help beginners to GarageBand learn GarageBand 11. The suggestion for the book, "GarageBand '11 Power!" -- well, this is not the book. The author is passionate but spends the first 58 pages telling you what he is going to tell you later in the book, so a reader must keep slogging along, not really being told anything, not learning any real how-to tips or new-you-can-use until ... who knows when?Sadly, this book does not fill the niche for the beginner.Wish there was a MIssing Manual edition for a later GarageBand issue. I'm picking up how-to tips from various places. The Missing Manual for GarageBand 1.1 was terrific.
Read other reviews about; too many pictures, bad illustrations, too technical. B.S., all non-issues. In fact the more the better, as far as screen shots go.Also the pictures were fine. Had no trouble understanding, in fact it also explained alot about the Mac too.I dunno, I thought it was really helpful nad easy to follow along. 5 stars for sure.

I have been looking for an updated reference for Garageband for awhile and ordered this based on its 4-star review average. I was disappointed. It has numerous editing mistakes and the illustrations appear to be scans done on a home copier. If you are already using GB you probably know 90% of the material covered here.Wish GB for Dummies would get an update.
